Historic and hip, Delray Beach, Florida is the perfect place to observe Memorial Day weekend! Known for its artistic flair, the quaint city of Delray Beach is wildly popular for its white sand beaches, culinary cuisine, and vibrant nightlife. The charming coastal city has a draw for all age groups, too. Young and the young at heart get lost in the mystique of Delray’s past and the magic of Delray’s present. When making your weekend plans, consider the following fun ideas or attend one of the scheduled events:

Honor the Fallen at a Memorial Day Parade

Each year, local municipalities organize a Memorial Day parade or ceremony to pay tribute to the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. The parades’ start time depends on the location, so be sure to check local government websites. Generally, ceremonies and parades are held in Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Boca Raton, and Stuart.

Craft Festival at the Delray Beach Tennis Center

The festival features an eclectic assortment of artisans, florists, and chefs who will proudly showcase their paintings, pottery, glass work, apparel, soaps, and sauces. This year, the family-friendly festival is pleased to welcome some of the nation’s top crafters along with local artisans.

Rod Stewart Experience (Tribute Band)

The rhythm of your heart will be beating like a drum at the Rod Stewart Experience on Friday, May 26th. The free concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Square Pavilion, an open-air venue located in the historic district off Swinton Avenue. A part-time Palm Beacher who is frequently spotted shopping and dining at establishments along Worth Avenue, Rod Stewart previously told In Style Magazine that he appreciates the quietness of Palm Beach. “It is probably one of the most relaxed places on earth. The days go by slowly-beautifully-at seaside, as we call it in England,” he said. Residents of Palm Beach County could not agree more.

Explore Downtown Delray Beach

Take a stroll down Atlantic Avenue and its tree-lined side streets. Stop into swanky shops such as Circe Swag, Love Shack, and The Snappy Turtle. Grab lunch or dinner at a local hotspot such as Dada, Cut 432, or Rocco’s Tacos. As you meander through the historic district, take notice of the early to mid 1900s architecture, a mixed showcase of Florida vernacular, Anglo-Caribbean, Mediterranean-Revival, and Art Deco styles and structures.

Enjoy Sunday Brunch at the Sundy House

Constructed circa 1902, the Sundy House is the oldest building in Delray Beach and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Boasting a Victorian, Queen-Anne style, the Sundy House can accommodate 12 guests in its luxurious suites in the Townhouse Building or the Stable Building, a separate structure that features equestrian-themed rooms. Sundy House is most popular for its Saturday and Sunday brunches. A buffet-style breakfast that includes bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys, the brunch is $75 per person and recommendations are highly recommended.

Sip an Old Fashioned at the Old Arcade

Have a nightcap at the Old Arcade, a 112-year old speakeasy that still reflects its Prohibition-era persona. To enter, one must walk through Caffe Martier, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant. A staple in Delray, the Old Arcade and Tap Room was a popular hub for artists, illustrators, writers, and cartoonists. In fact, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Charles Williams, Herb Roth, .T. Webster, and Fontaine Fox are known to have spent time writing and socializing in this special speakeasy. Today, the intimate bar room features classic cocktails and creative libations. The bar is open from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. and reservations are recommended during season.

Celebrate Donna Summer

Mary Gaines Bernard, sister of the late disco diva Donna Summer, celebrates the life and legacy of Summer’s with a musical concert at the Old Square Pavilion. The show begins at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 28th, and tickets range from $20 for general admission to $50 for preferred seating. Chair rentals are $5.

Bask at the Beach

One of Florida’s top 10 beaches, Delray Beach is the perfect place to frolic in the blue sea, build sand castles, fish from the shoreline, or relax with a book in you hand and toes in the sand. The Municipal Beach offers parking, outdoor showers and restrooms facilities. Additional amenities are found at beachfront parks, including Sarah Gleason Park, Sandoway Park, Anchor Park, and Atlantic Dunes Park.
